Crypto Exchange Gemini Secures $50 Million Funding From Nasdaq Ahead Of IPO

Image
Crypto exchange Gemini, founded by billionaires Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has secured Nasdaq as both a listing partner and an investor ahead of the company’s proposed initial public offering (IPO). Gemini aims to debut on the Nasdaq this Friday under the ticker “GEMI,” a timeline that is still dependent on market conditions, according to a Reuters report that cited sources familiar with the matter. Nasdaq will buy $50 million worth of the crypto exchange’s shares in a private placement at the time of the IPO, which aims to raise more than $300 million. That’s after Gemini said last week that it plans to selling 16,666,667 shares of its Class A common stock at between $17 and $19 per share. The exchange will also grant underwriters a 30-day option to buy an additional 2,396,348 shares.  The exchange’s arrangement with Nasdaq will extend to giving Nasdaq’s clients access to Gemini’s custody and staking services.  Meanwhil...

Kraken secures money license registrations in Spain and Ireland

The move follows the crypto exchange's successful VASP registration in Italy. Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has received an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) from the Central Bank of Ireland and registration as a virtual asset service provider (VASP) from the Bank of Spain. According to the Sept. 26 announcement, the EMI license enables Kraken to expand euro-to-crypto trading services to 27 European Union (EU) member states and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. Meanwhile, the VASP registration in Spain allows Kraken to offer exchange and wallet custodial services to Spanish residents. The firm is also registered as a VASP in Italy and Ireland. Kraken's vice president of global operations Curtis Ting commented: "We see a firm foundation for crypto in Europe, which has forward-looking regulation that enables us to grow with confidence." The platform currently supports over 200 trading pairs across six fiat currencies — the British pound, euro, U.S. dollar, ...

AI token trading volume stagnant despite Worldcoin buzz – Kaiko data

The examination revealed a moderate increase in the trading volume of AI tokens last month, reaching approximately $870 million, up from $570 million at the close of July. While the debut of Worldcoin drew attention to artificial intelligence-powered tokens(AI-tokens), recent trading data from Kaiko indicates that these AI tokens have shown resilience despite the controversy surrounding Worldcoin's launch. According to recent Kaiko data, the trading volume of AI-related tokens remained stagnant during the past month. The examination revealed a moderate increase in the trading volume of AI tokens last month, reaching approximately $870 million, up from $570 million at the close of July. Nevertheless, when compared to the volume at the beginning of the year, there was a significant decrease. In the same vein, Dessislava Ianeva, an analyst from Kaiko, noted that enthusiasm for AI tokens began to diminish in July, primarily due to a change in global risk sentiment. The total ope...

Bitcoin remains stuck in a range, but certain altcoins are showing signs of breaking down in the near term. The bulls tried to shake Bitcoin from its slumber on Sept. 7, but the rally was short-lived. This suggests a lack of clarity between the bulls and the bears about Bitcoin’s (BTC) next directional move. Analyst CryptoCon said on X (formerly Twitter) that Bitcoin could remain in a “mid cycle lull” until the start of the next bull run in November 2024. Along similar lines, ARK Invest said in a report that cryptocurrencies could continue to face headwinds in the remainder of 2023 due to several macroeconomic issues, such as interest rates, gross domestic product estimates, unemployment and inflation. Bitwise withdraws Bitcoin and Ether Market Cap ETF application

Bitwise was among a number of asset managers looking to launch spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the United States. In an unexpected turn of events, Bitwise submitted a request to retract its application for its Bitcoin and Ether Market Cap Weight Strategy exchange-traded fund (ETF), initially filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Aug. 3. While market sentiment turned bullish following Grayscale’s SEC victory, Bitwise appears to be reassessing its strategy. The withdrawal of the ETF application was unexpected; however, in the filing, a statement read, “The fund seeks to provide investors with capital appreciation. There can be no assurance that the fund will achieve its investment objective.” Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan advocated for SEC approval of all ETFs in a recent Bloomberg interview. The ETF intended to invest in either Bitcoin (BTC) futures contracts or Ether (ETH) futures contracts, determined by market capitalization....

Bitcoin traders put eyes on $31K even as $2B in BTC options expire on Friday

Image
BTC traders fix their eyes on $31,000 even as $2 billion in Bitcoin options are set to expire this Friday. The upcoming $2 billion Bitcoin (BTC) monthly options expiry on July 28 could potentially establish $29,500 as a support level. Some argue that the recent U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate increase to 5.25% had a detrimental effect on risk-on assets like cryptocurrencies. However, Bitcoin bulls believe that the full impact of a tighter economic policy takes time to influence the markets. Bitcoin daily price movements during option expiries. Source: TradingView Looking back, the monthly expiry on June 30 did not cause significant volatility, given that Bitcoin had already experienced a 22.2% gain between June 15 and June 23. Conversely, the May monthly expiry triggered a 9% rally, with Bitcoin's price rising from $26,100 on May 25 to $28,450 on May 29. In contrast, the options expiry in April resulted in a 7% correction, as Bitcoin's price dropped from $29,900 on April 2...

3 key Ethereum price metrics point to growing resistance at the $1,750 level

Image
Ethereum price looks poised for additional downside as low as the $1,560 level. Ether (ETH) price plunged 7% between June 14 and June 15, reaching its lowest level in three months and impacting investors’ view that the altcoin was en-route to turning $2,000 to support.  It is worth noting that the $1,620 bottom represents a $196 billion market capitalization for Ether, which is higher than PetroChina’s $186 billion, and not far from chipmaker AMD’s $198 billion. Being the 66th largest global tradable asset in the world is no small feat, especially considering that the cryptocurrency is merely 8 years old and does not return any kind of direct profit for the project’s maintenance. On the other hand, securities enjoy the benefits of corporate earnings and eventual government subsidies, so perhaps investors should be concerned by the recent price drop from Ether. Ether price pressured succumbs to regulation and lowered network activity Regulatory pressure helped to subdue investors’ a...

Bitcoin and altcoins could see profit taking and risk-off positioning as the weekend approaches and investor concerns about Deutsche Bank arise. The European stock markets fell on March 24 on renewed fears that the banking crisis could rear its ugly head once again. The latest selling was triggered after Deutsche Bank’s credit default swaps, which offer protection to the buyer against specific risks, soared on March 23 without any known catalyst. That pulled down the shares of the German lender by 11%.  European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde attempted to calm the markets, saying that the euro area baking sector was strong due to the regulatory reforms introduced after the Global Financial Crisis. That could be one of the reasons for the solid recovery in the United States equities markets from the intraday lows. Bitcoin price flash spikes to $50K on Binance after USD Coin peg snaps

Image
The market frenzy that started with the Silicon Valley Bank collapse is pushing BTC price higher but with some casualties left behind. The panic caused due to USD Coin's (USDC) depeg from the U.S. dollar manifested itself in a wrong order, costing traders $50,000 per Bitcoin (BTC), albeit for several minutes. Bitcoin price sees $50K in "fat finger" error  The BTC/USDC pair on Binance flash spiked to $50,000 on March 12 around 7 pm UTC. The reason for the impulse spike is unknown and was likely due to a "fat finger" trade of a large order. BTC/USDC hourly price chart on Binance. Source: TradingView The potential reason for the flash spike is likely thin order books for the newly launched BTC-USDC pair on Binance. The exchange listed the pair only a few hours before the impulse price surge. According to a trader on Crypto Twitter, it is likely that a Bitcoin market order ate through the limit sell-orders on the pair up to $50,000. The pair's trading price re...

SEC not allowed to punish Voyager advisers over bankruptcy token, says US judge

Image
The SEC claims the transactions involved with redistributing the funds to impacted Voyager account holders will trigger U.S. securities laws. The United States Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) won’t be allowed to fine executives involved in Voyager Digital should it end up issuing bankruptcy token s to help repay impacted customers, bankruptcy judge Michael Wiles has said. The comments from Wiles came on Mar. 6, the third day of hearings regarding a plan by Voyager to issue a repayment token and sell $1 billion of assets to Binance.US. The SEC earlier argued that the repayment token would constitute an unregistered security offering, while Binance.US is operating an unregulated securities exchange. In a supplemental objection statement, it also objected to a legal protection which stated that no U.S. agency, including the SEC, will be able to bring “any claim against any Person on account of or relating to the Restructuring Transactions.” Essentially, this means that executiv...

Bitcoin price searches for direction ahead of this week’s $710M BTC options expiry

Image
BTC’s recent price swings are the result of regulatory pressure and the Federal Reserve’s stance on U.S. inflation. Bitcoin (BTC) bulls laid most of their options at $24,500 and higher for the March 3 options expiry, and given the recent bullishness seen from BTC, who can blame them? On Feb. 21, Bitcoin price briefly traded above $25,200, reflecting an 18% gain in eight days. Unfortunately, regulatory pressure on the crypto sector increased and despite no effective measures being announced, investors are still wary and reactive to remarks from policymakers. For instance, on Feb. 23, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler claimed that "everything other than Bitcoin" falls under the agency's jurisdiction. Gensler noted that most crypto projects "are securities because there's a group in the middle and the public is anticipating profits based on that group." March 1 comments from two U.S. Federal Reserve (FED) officials reiterated the nece...

Bitcoin and major altcoins are witnessing a tough battle between the bulls and the bears, indicating indecision in the near term. The United States Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said on Feb. 7 that the “disinflationary process, the process of getting inflation down,” has started but it is still in its very early stages. He cautioned that strong data would be met with more rate hikes. Though the comments are mixed, they triggered buying in the S&P 500 and Bitcoin (BTC) on Feb. 7 as investors speculated that the Fed may soon end its rate hikes. Bitcoin’s strong rally in January and signs of ebbing inflation seem to have turned around investor sentiment. CoinShares data on Jan. 30 shows that institutional investors pumped $117 million into digital investment products. That sent the total assets under management to $28 billion, a sharp 43% increase from its November 2022 low. Daily cryptocurrency market performance.
