Is 2023 the year genuine cross-chain interoperability takes off?

Blockchains need to become interoperable in order for the industry to truly flourish and several innovations will accelerate the ecosystem towards it, say executives. The future of blockchain will be an interoperable one — with the death of “chain tribalism,” the proliferation of “hundreds of chains” along with an end to cross-chain bridge hacks, according to executives at Korea Blockchain Week. Backing up the claims are several products slated for release before the end of the year that could see blockchain interoperability efforts move away from current solutions which execs say don’t make sense and are a “honeypot” for hackers. Vance Spencer, the co-founder of the crypto-focused venture firm Framework Ventures told Cointelegraph at KBW that he thinks with many solutions on the horizon including Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) — it soon won’t matter what blockchain a project uses. He said most startups begin on layer-2 solutions such as Optimism or Arbitrum ...

On-chain analysis: Why is it wrong for Forbes to accuse Binance of "misappropriating 1.8 billion USDC"?

Image
Author: @0xMavWisdom Forbes posted an article on Monday (February 27th) accusing Binance of quietly transferring $1.8 billion in stablecoin collateral to hedge funds including Alameda and Cumberland/DRW last year, and in doing so condemning Binance’s misappropriation of user assets. For a six-month-old statistic, Forbes’ timing of the article is also subtle, as just two weeks prior, Binance was also embroiled in controversy over BUSD. The article on the misappropriation of user assets apparently caused enough of a public outcry that Binance responded the next day, saying, “The institutions mentioned in the Forbes article are spontaneous transfers by institutional users; Binance has never misappropriated user funds, whether they are assets of centralized exchanges or collateral for B-token “. So what is the truth, this article will combine the on- chain data and address labels to restore it for you. Statement: This article has no interest relationship with the relevant parties in the a...

Bridge attacks will still pose a major challenge for DeFi in 2023: Security experts

Hackers have stolen over $2.5 billion through vulnerabilities on cross-chain bridges in the past two years. Security has been a critical challenge for decentralized finance (DeFi) and its evolution. Between 2020 and 2022, hackers stole over $2.5 billion through vulnerabilities on cross- Chain bridges, Token Terminal data shows. Compared to other security breaches, this is a substantial amount. Issues with bridges have a root cause: All of them have an "inherent vulnerability," Theo Gauthier, founder and CEO of Toposware, told Cointelegraph. According to Gauthier, no matter how secure a bridge is on its own, it is "entirely reliant on the security of the chains it connects," meaning that any breach or bug within one of the two bridged chains makes the overall bridge vulnerable. Briefly, bridges are used to connect different blockchains and aim to address the lack of standards between protocols. Interoperability between blockchains is considered to be a critical goa...
